Preston Sudduth is a longtime member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in Pine Grove, Virginia, where he has served his local congregation in leadership and spiritual ministry since 2018. Known within his community for his kindness, compassion, and knowledge of spiritual matters, Preston has a particular interest in helping others deepen their relationship with God. His ministry reflects the Episcopal tradition’s emphasis on worship, service, community, and the continuing work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of ordinary people. Preston has a particular interest in ecumenism and in exploring the many ways Christians and people of other traditions seek and understand God. His broad theological interests are accompanied by a genuine appreciation for conversation across denominational and religious boundaries. Preston lives with his wife and enjoys the company of their adult children, as well as their cat and their much-loved dog, Piloy. For Preston, faith is not simply an academic subject, but an ongoing exploration of spiritual truth, community, and the ways in which people can encounter one another across differences. His combination of theological curiosity, wide reading, and ecumenical spirit makes him a valued voice in the spiritual life of his community.
Reverend Valerie Hayes
Hello! I am Valerie Hayes, your new long-term supply priest, and am looking forward to being with y'all at St. George's. My husband, Jim Wolfe, and I have lived in the Shenandoah Valley for eight years after moving to Front Royal in the fall of 2018 when I was called as rector to Calvary Episcopal. I am a 2009 graduate from Virginia Seminary and went on to a one-year chaplain-resident at Georgetown University Hospital. From there I served for three years as a full time staff chaplain at the Clinical Research Center at the National Institutes of Health. In 2013, I returned to parish ministry at the Church of the Holy Comforter in Vienna, Virginia as their senior associate rector. From Holy Comforter, I became rector at Calvary, providing pastoral care and leadership through the pandemic, restoring the historic church building, and navigating changing and growing dynamics. After serving for six and a half years, I stepped away from that ministry to take a sabbatical, enjoy time with family, and to discern a new direction for my vocational life. I am currently an associate with the Shalem Institute (in D.C.) in their spiritual guidance program and have been serving as supply priest and spiritual director in the Valley and northern Virginia. My husband Jim has taught in the School of Business at George Mason University for over twenty years. He loves our five acres and especially raising his bees and collecting honey! We live with Molly (a lab-plott hound mix with bionic knees) and Kitty Bennett, our rescue cat. Between the two of us, we have four adult children. Jim's adult daughter and son, Avery and James, both live and work in northern Virginia. My son Will lives outside Asheville with a day job while growing his musical craft playing banjo and bluegrass as often as possible. My son Jonathan lives in Brooklyn and works in the city as a designer and craftsman for theater and the Cooper Hewitt Museum. I am looking forward to being a partner in ministry with St. George's in Pine Grove and seeing what the Holy Spirit is up to! Wishing you all God's abundant blessings, grace, and joy.
