Our History
St. George's is a small congregation located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, near Shenandoah National Park. Nestled in the remote community of Pine Grove, we started in the early 1900s as one of the Mountain Missions of The Episcopal Diocese of Virginia, and are deeply rooted in the picturesque hollow in which we are located. The stone building which currently serves as the main structure of St. George's Episcopal Church was built in the 1920s, and now stands near the site of the original wooden building which it replaced. Local craftsmen from the community laid the beautiful stonework that adorns the church both inside and out, and they also contributed much of the original stone work found on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.
Our early history was greatly influenced by Deaconess Hutton, who served as a missionary at St. George's Episcopal Church in Pine Grove as well as other churches in the county and in 1951 was chosen "Tops Our Town.'" At the age of 3, Deaconess was stricken with polio and spent the majority of her lifetime on crutches and in a wheelchair. But from that winged chair, she managed to build a substantial mission (Pine Grove Mission), teach Sunday school, hold prayer meetings, ladies auxiliary and children's services weekly, conduct summer Bible school, assist the poor and provide a clinic for minor illnesses and children's vaccinations.

Our worship at St. George's is grounded in the Anglican tradition, but with a healthy dose of mountain hospitality and culture added in! If you are visiting Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah Valley, or if you are looking for a church home to regularly attend, please feel welcome to come worship with us.
We hold Sunday morning prayer services at 11 a.m. on every Sunday of the month, including Holy Communion on each 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month at:
